About

The practice:

Plantstallation is a socially engaged art practice using material empathy that focuses on building confidence and wellbeing. This practice features the rich and varied plant life native to Scotland and brings together the plants’ unique symbolism, historic use, plant lore, and contemporary status. Using Scottish plants in combination with other objects and materials that are meaningful to you or relate to the plants in some way, artworks known as plantstallations are assembled. The aim is to build up your confidence through this creative activity whilst also strengthening your relationship with the natural world, fostering positive exchanges with others working through the practice just as you are.

About myself:

My name is Mara Marxt Lewis and I am a socially engaged art practitioner. My work encourages personal experience. My practice is concerned with the interactions between humans and with the complex relationships between humans and their natural environments. My endeavors inspire individuals to reflect on their nuanced connections with nature, examine their positions and roles within their environs, and engage with their physical surroundings through different sensorial means. I continually navigate between the realms of collective engagement and individual experience such that my projects accommodate both use and contemplation. My plantstallation practice aspires not only to connect people with people but also to connect people with nature.
